May 2004

From Ange on 25th May 2004

I went to see the Quireboys play in Sheffield recently and Michael Lee was the drummer.  It wasn't clear if he was a permanent fixture or just a fill in.

I said hello to him at the end of the gig when he was wandering around.  He didn't seem quite 'with it' though, a bit 'spaced out' and he seemed to be dragged away by what must have been his 'other half'. I mentioned that I'd met him a lot in the past, but didn't expect him to remember me, but he just stared through me.  Ah well....I'll keep the memories apart from that encounter.

As a student, I went to see Jonny Ball do 'Think of a Number' at Warrington Parr Hall (bear with me on this), at the end of the show lots of lovely long haired roadies were bringing in equipment and we quizzed them on the way out about what they were up to.  A band called Little Angels were going to play there that night.  Never heard of them.  We were off to see Richard Marx play at Manchester Apollo.  The roadie said that Little Angels were new and good and if we asked for him on the door that night he'd get us in on his list.  A free gig.  We went and we loved it.

We were media students and had to do a project which required us to make a documentary movie.  We'd heard that Little Angels were returning to Warrington Parr Hall for another show so contacted Kevin, their manager and he agreed we could film them.  I sent my first ever fax to Polydor saying we wouldn't sell the film or do anything dodgy with it and there we were with Access All Area stickers and state of the art giant cameras filming a fabulous gig!  After the show we went back stage and interviewed Toby.

After that we were hardened fans and kept managing to either win radio competitions to go to meet and greets or found ourselves bumping into the band at venues.  They all recognised us, we'd even get the odd wave from them on stage.

Leeds Town and Country Club was the last gig that I saw them at on the farewell tour.  The place was packed and the atmosphere was electric.  I was down there at the front.

Gutted that they broke up, I went to see Toby and the Whole Truth at the Octagon in Sheffield, but it just seemed flat.  Toby looked pale and not quite 'with it'.

These days I run a rock bar in Sheffield dedicated to live music for up and coming bands who love to play for playing's sake, there's a little 'rock shrine' to Little Angels on the back bar and their music is regularly played on the system.  Last week a band played and the singer was wearing a Little Angels T shirt, faded but very, very memorable.
