Jam was recorded between May and August 1992 and was mixed in Vancouver at
Little Mountain Studios. The album was produced
by Andy Julian Paul and Ken Lomas, along with Kevin Nixon and the band -
very much a team effort. All in all, the album took over a year to
come to a result, what with writing, rehearsing, and generally sorting stuff
out like building a new rehearsal room (a converted garage)!
The basic tracks were cut in Studio One at Air Studios,
Oxford Street - a very famous studio that has turned out some very
successful albums. The additional recording was done largely at Jacobs
Studio near Farnham, Surrey and the band finished up at Eden Studios in
Chiswick.
There were some
interesting things happening while we recorded. Bruce had to resort to
recording his guitars by putting his Vox AC 40 in the back of Kevin's car to
create the required sound and, as the recording progressed, the studio had
to hire a mobile steel dumpster to store the car in because the neighbours
were complaining about the noise! Another strange thing that kept on
happening to us was break-downs; everywhere we went the studio equipment
seemed to develop faults, much to the amazement of everybody at the studio.
We had to use no less than four different multi-track machines at Air
Studio, 'cos mysterious sound and bumps began to appear on the tape and the
same thing at Eden Studios, mikes would furiously turn themselves off and
the maintenance men would stand open-mouthed as equipment that had been fine
before we arrived went on the blink - BIZARRE! I always said we
shouldn't have hired the Devil to be a tape operator.
The album features a couple of guest contributions (besides
Bryan Adams). Francis Dunnery (ex It-Bites) popped in and lent his
soulful tonsils to a couple of tracks and Mark Letham (ex Nine Below Zero)
contributed some mouth organ.
